This shows a few things. The first is that you see them in a positive way, the second is that you have a genuine concern for their well being, and the third is that you need time to yourself to avoid bickering about stupid things. I will try to implement this and see how it works.

Most of them are common sense but even so, they are things that I tend to forget about when they are most important.

Other things that help me a lot and almost immediately (like within a day) are getting enough sleep, exercising, eating well, hot showers, tea, positive people, laughter, being alone for a while and just chilling. I’m an introvert and I guess I just recuperate by having a little time to be alone.

I don’t remember where I read this but one day I found a technique for arguing. The idea is to hold hands with the person you are arguing with. I guess it’s supposed to keep the conversation “real” or keep it from getting too heated. It’s hard to hide your feelings that way because you can literally feel what the other person feels in their hands. Well, I had an opportunity to try it out and I was surprised at the results. The person I tried this with and I had a lot of tension between us due to a fight a few days earlier. For me, I had a lot of feelings that built up inside me for a few days and the second I tried this technique, it all sorta spewed out. I started bawling. Which is fine because I felt a lot better afterward. My partner said it brought out a feeling of wanting to run away but also seemed slightly calmed by it.

This is a very short article with a small exercise to get you thinking about how to express your feelings effectively. It’s called an “emotional vocabulary.” I notice that a lot of time I have trouble finding the right words to describe my feelings, intentions, thoughts, etc. just because I have never really thought about having an accessible library of words to describe them.

My Answers:

1. 5 words related to feeling sad: unhappy, blue, gloomy, depressed, spiritless
2. 5 words related to feeling mad: ticked, irritated, vexed, angry, furious
3. 5 words related to feeling glad: content, joyful, blissful, delighted, pleased
4. SAD + MAD = upset, grim, resentful, sore, bitter
5. GLAD + SAD = confused?

I don’t really know any words that describe number 5. I’m not sure you can truly be both happy and sad at the same time. You can have mixed feelings or be confused about how you really feel. Or maybe you have different feelings about certain aspects of a given situation but have “mixed feelings” about the situation as a whole.

In general, there are way too many words to describe these basic feelings. And as odd as this sounds, I noticed that while looking for synonyms for sad, mad and glad, I was actually experiencing each emotion. That teaches you something about surrounding yourself with positivity.
